Fuel economy units, explained

Drivers in the United States quote miles per US gallon, UK drivers use miles per imperial gallon, which is about 20% larger, and most of the world uses litres per 100 km. Some countries, including India, Pakistan and Japan, also use kilometres per litre. Choose your units at the top of each car calculator and the numbers you typed are converted, not cleared.

The costs that are easy to miss

Fuel or charging is the cost most people track, but depreciation is often the largest single cost of owning a newer car, followed by insurance and finance interest. The ownership calculator brings them together per month and per mile or kilometre, which makes it easier to compare a newer car with an older one, or petrol with electric.

Check finance figures with the lender

Lease and loan results here use standard payment formulas. Real offers include fees, mileage limits, taxes and insurance requirements that vary by country and dealer. Use the calculators to compare options on equal terms, then confirm the exact numbers in writing before you sign.
